Monica became certified as a Focusing-Oriented Trainer and Therapist with The Focusing Institute in New York in 2014. Focusing-oriented therapy is a body-centred and client-centred approach to healing, developed at the University of Chicago by Dr. Eugene Gendlin. Focusing, an experiential modality, is a technique for getting in touch with deep inner wisdom that includes, but is much more than our thoughts and feelings.

Focusing starts with the body and through our felt sense, we can tap into not only our thoughts, but also our feelings, our intuition and unconscious knowledge about an issue. This is where we can find out something new, something that moves us forward.

Aboriginal Focusing-Oriented Therapy with Complex Trauma was developed by Vancouver-based trauma expert Shirley Turcotte. AFOT is a land-based adaptation of Focusing-Oriented Therapy. Grounded in “all my relations” philosophy, AFOT is especially effective for healing complex trauma. It allows clients total control of the pace and direction of their healing journey. Monica will often integrate other treatment modalities with AFOT techniques, where appropriate. This trauma informed modality is applicable to all cultures and age groups.

Monica is also trained in EMDR. Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an integrative psychotherapy approach that has been extensively researched and proven effective for the treatment of trauma and many other mental health problems.  For more information on EMDR please visit or

Monica’s aim is to support parents in exploring the possible causes and meaning behind their children’s challenging behaviours. Monica works collaboratively with parents in exploring the different ways to address and respond to their child’s emotions and behaviors. Monica hopes to support parents to enhance parent-child communication and better familial relationships.

Monica has specialized in the area of providing parenting support focusing on issues such as:

  • concerns about their children’s behaviours or emotional problems

Therapy provided by counsellors is not covered under the basic BC Medical Services Plan. Many people have access to Extended Health Benefits (EHB) through their employers, which may include counselling services. You may be able to use your EHB to cover all or part of the costs of your counselling with Monica. Please check with your employer’s group plan terms to ensure the coverage criteria.

You will need to ensure that your coverage provides counselling services provided by a Registered Therapeutic Counsellor (RTC). If you have this type of coverage, than receipts issued by Monica can be used towards reimbursement. If your plan does not cover Registered Therapeutic Counsellors, but only covers Registered Psychologists, Social Workers and/or Counsellors with other designations, you can make a request to your employer, through the Human Resources Department, that they adjust their plan to include counselling by an RTC designation. Many employers are not aware that making this change to their plan is easy to do, and at no extra cost to them.

A receipt will be issued for each session. Receipts can be utilized for health plan reimbursement or may qualify towards tax deductions.
